Higher Phaser: "So what have you stuck up your ass?"
Intake: "I haven't stuck anything up my ass, what the fuck are you talking about?"
Higher Phaser: "That's bullshit, you can't tell us that you have never stuck anything up your ass when doing sexual stuff to yourself."
Intake: "Sexual stuff? What are you talking about? I have a girlfriend!"
Higher Phaser: "Not anymore you don't. Your druggie girlfriend is now a part of your druggie past. You'll get honest about your sexual stuff in here or you'll sit and rot on a blue chair until you're 18."
Five Phase Description
For all teens, the KIDS experience began with an admission intake.
Most KIDS teens were deceived by their parents on the day of intake. Many teens believed they were going to a doctor appointment or elsewhere only to find themselves separated from their parents in a small intake room being questioned by teens already in the program. There are many former KIDS teens that report their intake day as an extremely traumatic experience where they were suddenly jettisoned from the life they knew on the outside to a sterile clinical environment that was restrictive in nature.
The teen was separated from the accompanying parent and taken to one of four intake rooms in the KIDS of El Paso admission area. The rooms were bright white with fluorescent lighting and were void of stimulation by design. The rooms were contrasted only by the presence of KIDS trademark blue plastic chairs. Intakes always started friendly and soon evolved to hard hitting questions involving interrogation techniques that were designed to shock and intimidate the future admit. Questions always related to the impact that the 'compulsion,' (whether it be drugs, food related, or behavioral in nature) had on the teen admits' family, friends, school, and law. Questions often turned personal and intimate in nature. It was not at all uncommon for the line of questioning to include the frequency and methods of masturbation, inquiries and allegations of sexual relationships with family members, and even pets. Honest answers were demanded and initial responses were often not accepted. The admit was often verbally confronted and told to "get honest" even when the admit may have been truthful.
Physical restraint was used on any teen that attempted to exit the intake interview prematurely.
At the conclusion of the intake, the teen was briefly reunited with his/her accompanying parent under the supervision of KIDS higher phasers and staff. Anger, apology, and often promises to 'change their ways' were often expressed during this time. The visit concluded with a hug, when the teen was willing, and the parent than exited the building.
The intake process could have lasted anywhere from 3-9 hours before the admit was strip searched and looked over by a consulting physician before being introduced to group.
